Chapter III

Aurelius took a step forward and held out his hand. Suddenly, there was a bolt of flame and the spider lay dead on the floor! They walked into the dungeon then they looked around. There was nothing to see. Then they went back out to the courtyard then they saw it. A jeweled platform near the south wall. They walked over to it and stood on it. Suddenly, it swung open and they began to fall! It seemed to take forever, but soon they landed in a big mud puddle.

Icsis hauled himself out and said, "Oh! Another one of those God-forsaken tunnels! How shall we ever avoid them?" They hopped onto Drake's back and began to fly. Soon they found themselves over deep water. Soon they found a tree wedged between the cavern walls. There they rested for the night, then they pressed on. Soon the water dropped off to reveal dry land. When it did they saw a trapdoor. They rushed to it, for it meant green grass, flowers, and sunshine but when it was open all they found was an old village with stone pyramids. They had just come out in the middle of Tenochtitlan (which was an Aztec city at the time). Aztecs came swarming out to meet them!

(More of Chapter III to come!)

Chapter II

Soon they were back on their way to Turkey.

As they were walking along the path, they found a trapdoor. They lifted it and found atunnel and went in. There were steps leading down into a chasm where something shining golden was down in it. "I have a bad feeling about this," said Icsis.

Something stirred. 30 seconds later they were at the bottom of the steps. It was then the serpent struck. It bit Icsis in the thigh! He spun around, but it was too late! The venom was spreading. "Run, Icsis! Run to the trapdoor!" shouted Disilis. The trapdoor slammed shut and suddenly the whole scene disappeared. It was then that they found the chest of emeralds. And Disilis found something else. It was a pike and a complete suit of armor! Then they went on for the trapdoor was locked.

They continued on into the next chamber. It was extremely bright compared to the last one they had been in. The candles lit the whole chamber, which was extremely big. Paintings covered the walls. There were pictures of people hunting, people farming, and then there were nature scenes, most of which were set in the woods. They walked through, admiring the paintings. They began to notice that there were creeks running on either side of a path in the middle of the floor. They walked on and on. The chamber seemed to never end until they reached an open door.

They walked into a less-lit chamber where the creeks ended in little pools. The shadows seemed to jump out at them. Suddenly there was a roar! Then there was a bright light that came out of the dim chamber, and a dragon flew into their sight! It was red with yellow-tinged wings. Then Icsis roared back.

“Does Icsis know dragon?” Aurelius said to Disilis.
“Yes, he does, very well in fact.”
Icsis translated. “He says hello.”
“What?” said Aurelius.
“Tell him he is welcome to join us,” said Disilis.
“He says 'Thank you',” said Icsis.

Then they walked on, the dragon flying behind them. He told them that his name was Drake Firestring. They walked on and on; finally the chamber ended. The door was barred and locked. They could not get through it. Drake blew fire and burnt the door down. There was a hissing, and the fire stopped. There was a great length of water ahead.

“I guess we will have to swim,” said Icsis.
“Or you could ride on my back,” roared Drake.

So they hopped on to Drake's back. Occasionally he would blow fire to light their way ahead. Finally, they found a landing island, sort of like a sand bar in the ocean. There they landed and rested, filled their casks with water (for it was fresh water they had been flying over), and slept. They overslept, however, for they could not tell morning from night. In what they thought was the morning, they continued.

They flew on, and the tunnel began to rise and the water dropped off into wet dirt.
“Ahhhh, dry land at last,” said Icsis.

They jumped off the dragon's back and ran all the way up to another trap door, similar to the previous one but not locked. They opened the trap door and sunlight filtered inside. They saw that there were actually fish in the water. They walked out onto dry land overlooking Loch Ness. The water of the loch stirred.

“Some people say there's a monster down there,” said Icsis, suddenly realizing where they were.
“Oh, I never knew that,” said Aurelius.Suddenly, a serpentine head reared up from the water.

“Aaaaaugh!” said Icsis. It began to swim toward them. Soon, they realized that it could slide on land as well as it could swim! It began to slither toward them. Disilis took out his pike and thrust it at the serpent. It reared its head when the pike struck, although it did not fall. It started again to slither toward them. Icsis took out his bow and notched an arrow to it. “This monster seems invincible!” he said.
“Not to my magic,” said Aurelius.

Suddenly, the monster disappeared and all that was left were a few ripples in the loch. Soon they found another trapdoor. They opened it and found that there was extremely soft soil on the left wall. “There must have been a cave-in, and someone has created a continuation of the other tunnel from a different spot,” said Icsis. They hopped on to Drake's back for faster travel, and set off through the trapdoor.

This tunnel was flooded, too, because groundwater from the other tunnel had seeped in through the loose soil and filled this one. Eventually, they found a wall of stone where they landed and slept for what they thought was the night. When they woke up, they could travel on land again, because the water could not get through stone. Suddenly, there was a door ahead with torches on either side. It was unlocked. They went through and found themselves in a brightly lit chamber similar to the one where they had met Drake. They walked on. Later, they encountered a serpent which was considerably hard to kill because the tunnel had become narrow.

When they found another door, they opened it. To their surprise, they found themselves in the bottom of a castle tower. They climbed to the top and looked out. They found themselves in a large castle! They decided to explore the castle. They climbed down into the courtyard then decided to investigate the dungeon. Suddenly, they found themselves going down the steps into a very dark series of chambers. There were many doors leading off to both sides. They opened one and found themselves face to mandibles with a gigantic spider!

Chapter I

It was nearing dark. They were hoping to find shelter somewhere nearby. Fortunately, they saw a cave. It looked dangerous, but welcoming at the same time. They went in and took out blankets. Then after a few breaths, they were fast asleep.

Suddenly, they woke up, because of a slithering sound they had heard. They had dreamed that tiny, tiny, monsters were slithering across the cave floor toward them. When they awoke, it was true!

They were tiny, leech-like creatures. Their length was at most one foot. I’m going to try to describe them. For one thing, as I have already told you, they were one foot long. And instead of purple, they were a sick yellow. They were called redetsas.

Icsis lit a torch. Suddenly the redetsas started shrinking. When the flame touched one, it instantly shriveled up. He did this with every single redetsa until they were gone. And then they left the cave.

They found an outcrop of rocks where they slept for the rest of the night.

In the morning, they went back to the cave. They hadn't gone very far, when they rounded a corner. as soon as they were past, the wall from the corner came sliding after them. Suddenly, there was a dead end in front of them, with footholds on its wall. They ran to the dead end and climbed up. Apparently, there was a trap door. They climbed outside just in time as the moving wall slammed into the dead end, smacking it right out as if it were a door. They jumped back down onto the cavern floor, and walked into the chamber it had opened.

It had great golden arches, with paintings on the walls. “It must be the home of an old civilization that left a long, long, time ago,” said Icsis.

“It must have been abandoned for a long time, but I see shedded skins of snakes on the floor,” said Disilis.

Then they left the cave. “The civilization must have been chased out by serpents . We must help them,” said Icsis .

“Ah, but what happend to the serpents? They are very powerful,” said Disilis. There was no sign of them.”

“ Oh, no!” said Icsis, then somewhere nearby a serpent was stirring. Then it attacked them. Icsis notched an arrow to his bow and the serpent reared up and bared its teeth. Icsis drew back and let fly. The arrow's aim was true; it hit the serpent in the eye and it fell back never to harm human kind. Then they left the place of the battle. While they walked they took note of the crumbled houses. There was even a temple. Icsis even went in to touch the sculpture and as soon as he did it crumbled away to reveal a human skeleton. Icsis gasped in horror. ''But how?" said Disilis. To Icsis' horror, the skeleton walked away, leaving them in the temple speechless. Then they walked out of the temple. On their way to Turkey later... finally they made it to the sea just to find that they had no boat, so they began to gather some driftwood to make a raft. They went to sea….

81 miles later…

They were nearing the Mediterranean Sea where they would begin to walk across dry land until they reached Turkey. When they finally landed in Italy, their food supply was nearly exhausted. They walked over to a nearby fisherman. Disilis said, "qius es." He replied, "Oralios sum pater sum."
"Oralios, I am Disilis and he is my partner Icsis. Can you help us? We are hungry. Surely you have a home."
"Yes I do have a home and I am willing to feed you," said Oralios.
"Then lead on, we need rest."
When they reached his home they were too tired to eat or drink so they fell asleep. When they awoke, he was gone. They went to the market and quickly found him selling the fish he had hooked the other day so they went back to Oralios' home to wait for him.

Soon he was back ...

Preface

Two warriors were walking along a road in Denmark. I might mention to you the names of both of them. One was called Disilis and the other was called Icsis. Disilis was from Finland, whereas Icsis was from Denmark, where they were currently walking. As you might realize, they were Vikings. They were going down to Turkey, where they were going to travel into the Islamic Empire, currently under the curse of the Crusades. There were many dangers they were going to have to pass, and that is what I am going to tell you about in this book.
